I believe that discourse is necessary for ideas to be shared and refined between groups of people. There are infinitely many different points of view that provide many different layers of context for any given issue. Therefore it is important for us to each listen to other people's opinions. Which provides us with the importance of participating in discourse. It is also important that everyone is taught how to participate in respectful discourse which provides us with a mode to listen to every point of view.
I like your idea that listening to others' opinions is very important. Respect can be shown in a professional manner while communicating with students, colleagues, and parents.
A discourse is an identity that a person uses in order to fit into a certain role in society. A person assumes many different discourses during their day as they change roles. A discourse is used to maintain certain behaviors in order to be accepted by a specific group. It influences a person’s thoughts, actions, and words. Using an appropriate discourse is important. This has many applications in teaching. A teacher uses confident body language and vocabulary specific to the content they are presenting. The teacher also wears professional clothing. If this person is a kindergarten teacher, they might smile a lot, write with neat handwriting, and use a sweet, soft voice to talk the students. The actions of this teacher during school would be very different from their actions outside of work. After school, this teacher may assume the discourse of a coach. A coach might wear a whistle around their neck, shouting encouragement and giving advice to the athletes they’re training. They might praise athletes that perform particularly well. On occasion, they may give demonstrations of techniques. When the coach goes home, they may assume the discourse of a parent. This parent might give their child a hug, and make dinner for the family. The parent might also assign chores or tutor their children. Therefore, I think that a discourse presents one’s social role.
I like this explanation of discourse. I think that it does a good job of connecting literacy and discourse. If you are literate in a certain discourse, then you will be successful in, for example, teaching. Continued practice in the discourses will help improve literacy.
Good evening everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend.
When I think of discourse as explained by Gee I instantly thought of our potential students and their "educational discourses". Gee states discourses to be "...ways of being in the world, or forms of life which integrate words, acts, values, beliefs, attitudes and social identities as well as gestures, glances, body positions, and clothes." To me, not all discourses are the same for each person, especially in the education and thought process side of things. Each person handles themselves in different ways and in different situations. Just like our students as learners handle information. A basic example could be a student who needs more visual models while another student may need more verbal modeling to process information. We as teachers use discourses in our instruction for each and every student of our classroom. Our discourse for one student could be completely different for another student. The way we explain something, the way we connect our discourse to a students thought process and our strategies must be changed to cater to each students learning needs.
I like how you said that your discourse with one student may be completely different with another. The way that we communicate and relate to another student will be completely different depending on what each student needs and what their interests are. We are able to demonstrate our literacy in the discourse by being able to determine how we need to communicate differently with each student.
You are right. When teachers explain the material to students, we should use different strategies and different words for every student since they have different learning styles and every student is unique. This is another reason that we have to know our students.
