Do not put these kinds of pictures on the lamppost. The learning environment is very important for the students at college.
Literacy in the little things. Literacy is needed to avoid confusion. Attention should be paid to the details. It is the little things that provide the foundation for big concepts.
This picture demonstrates many different aspects of literacy of painting. There was the simple tree that has a dancer incorporated into it and there are even letters to spell out my name in it. She also balanced colors that worked well together. If a student is able to use their literacy in painting to express their literacy in another subject, we may make the other skills that we are trying to teach them easier for them to access.
I think that this is a great representation of visual literacy. This type of literacy has applications in math in areas such as functions or statistics. Visual graphs can communicate a central idea much more effectively than abstract words. This literacy is a type of skill that can be developed through practice.
Driving Literacy here at Rhode Island College When I tend to think of literacy the first thing that comes to mind is fluency or skillful ness in something. Now I think I am quite literate in driving and I am very skilled. (Never even touched a car with my car let alone touched someone else's bumper.) This person on the other hand here at Rhode Island College could use some work.
Literacy can indeed be found everywhere in real life. Signs on the road can demonstrate the need for literacy. Literacy is especially needed when reading and signing medical documents or forms. Literacy is important in all aspects of life.
This is a photo of my brother checking on some brownies that he was baking. This demonstrates the literacy that our community has for cooking. Without people being literate in the proper way of preparing food, many people would get sick and die. Thankfully people have been learning how to cook food properly and we have been passing the knowledge on to each generation.
Cooking is important in our life. Preparing and cooking food requires certain knowledge and skills. This can be grouped into a category known as "cooking literacy". Cooking literacy is still needed, even as people consume more fast food and ready-to-eat meals.
This is a photo of a palm tree my mother created for a party. I feel that this demonstrates literacy in many things that are put together to make an accurately portrayed palm tree. There is literacy in knowing what the plant looks like, how to create it, and how to set up nice looking party decorations. There are many times that these skills are used in our society, even if they are not the most necessary of skills, these skills are used many times in our community for weddings, birthday parties, and others.
This picture represents a need for literacy in regards to graphs. These days, people are bombarded with information every day. Some of this information is given in the form of graphs. Therefore, people need to know how to interpret the information from the graphs. In addition to comprehending the content of a graph, they need to recognize graphs that are misleading. As this form of literacy has many applications in math class, teachers need to ensure that their students develop this crucial skill.
Literacy and Pattern Many people do not like math since they are not interested in math. However, math is very practical in our life. You might need to estimate how much you want to pay for tips. When driving to work in the morning, you might use the time it takes to drive there in order to estimate when to leave, as well as when to wake up. Math encourages people to think logically. If you find a pattern when learning, the process becomes much easier. Can you figure out how to extend the pattern in the first picture? This will encourage students to gain interest in math.
I love that you shared this picture! As a student and even now, I love to try and solve puzzles. That's where my love for math comes from basically. There's just a great feeling when you solve an equation or figure out a pattern in a sequence of problems. It takes great math literacy to do so, but math puzzles like these are always entertaining! Nice!
This is a picture of my brother's cookbook. My brother doubled the recipe. For this e had to be proficient in multiplying fractions, and multiplying integers. This is a practical example of when these skills are used in our society.
I had trouble pulling up the picture, BUT, you make a very good point. Math is all around us and especially in cooking or baking. Without math literacy our baker could made some really bad brownies or some really bad brownies! (I said really bad twice on purpose because there is no way you can make any food good without math literacy and understanding measurements or a solid recipe to follow!)
This is a good example of an application of operations with fractions and integers. When I went to the Food Bank of Rhode Island to learn how to cook food, some students from a group could not figure out the measurements because they did not know how to multiply fractions. This prevented them from finishing their task on time.
This is a photo of the nutrient facts that were on a bag of chips. The reader of this label has to understand percentages in order to be able to properly read the label and use the information correctly.
Although I usually ignore the serving amounts and just eat 100% of the chips and count that as my serving, its very important for anyone to watch what they eat. Watching serving size, nutrient intake is all about math. Knowing how many grams of each nutrient to take in is key to a healthy lifestyle and involves a lot of math literacy.
I do not have a habit of looking at the serving amounts. From now on, I should read it since the label provides important information that is useful when trying to eat healthfully.

A lack of appliance literacy People think that they should put their hands in front of the nozzle, but they actually need to put them beneath the nozzle. There would be less confusion if there was a picture to accompany the directions. When teaching, visual aids need to be used along with verbal explanations or words.
Retail stores all operate on math. The people that run these registers need a great sense of math literacy. Although us team members at the service desk have a register that can compute many math functions (fractions, percents etc), there are many times where we must use our math literacy and compute percents or fractions in our heads to fix mistakes or issues at the check outs because the register doesn't have a function. For instance, when guests don't scan some coupons and they are all percents off of a product, we must do the percent computations in our heads and manually enter a price for the coupon.
Money is definitely one big area in which math can be applied. Money is very important, because you need to have enough of it. If one is literate in regards to operations with money, they can quickly estimate discounts and detect errors when they occur. A person can't always depend on a calculator.
A great lesson I learned this past week in coordination with the Rhode Island State Police, obeying the posted speed limits. Knowing what speed you are at by reading the tick marks on your odometer and reading posted speed limits is a great form of math literacy. Knowing how fast is too fast or too slow all requires mathematics literacy!
Maintaining a safe speed is important for safety. Some people ignore the signs on the road. They think that they are good at driving, but they are not safe drivers. It's important to slow down when the speed on the odometer is greater than the speed limit. Math literacy.
